North Springfield Lake (SPRINGFIELD)
The 100-acre lake and 65-acre Stoughton Pond offer excellent warm-water fishing (small boats only). A small park on Stoughton Pond has a beach and picnic area. Reservoir lands are open for hunting and smowmobiling.
Union Village Dam (East Thetford)
Near Thetford, over 6 miles of river are available for fishing for stocked brown and rainbow trout and also natural brook trout. Recreation facilities include a swim area, picnic tables, grills, drinking water, overhead shelter and restrooms. Fees apply for some facilities. Summer and winter activities are popular with park visitors. Two scenic covered bridges nearby. Pack-In/Pack Out.
Green Mountain National Forest (Rutland)
The Green Mountain National Forest is a four season (some say six with mud and Black Fly season) recreation experience. The most popular season is autumn when the mountains are ablaze with color. Summer is popular for camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing, and canoeing. Winter brings out colorfully-clad skiers (both downhill and cross-country), snowboarders, snowmobilers, and snowshoe enthusiasts.
Ball Mountain Lake (Jamaica)
Winhall Brook Campground (seasonal 3rd weekend in May to Columbus Day weekend) offers streamside campsites; modern restrooms with hot showers; trailer dump station and resident campground attendants. The river and 75-acre lake offer fishing, and reservoir lands are open for hunting.
North Hartland Lake (North Hartland)
At the upper end of the reservoir, the Ottauquechee River flows through the sheer-faced 165-ft deep Quechee Gorge, one of the outstanding natural spectacles in the state. An overlook area and a state-managed campground as well as a new Visitor Center being built in the summer of 2004 are nearby. At North Hartland Lake, there is boating on the 215-acre lake, picnicking in a wooded picnic area, and a small beach offering swimming.
Townshend Lake (Townshend)
A 95-acre lake provides an attractive setting for the day-use area with swimming, picnicking, hiking and boating (10 horse power limit). A historic covered bridge is located downstream.
Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge (Swanton)
Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1943, is located on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain near the Canadian border in Franklin County, Vermont. This 6, 642-acre refuge includes most of the Missisquoi River delta where it flows into Missisquoi Bay. The refuge consists of quiet waters and wetlands which attract large flocks of migratory birds. Upland areas of the refuge are a mix of open fields and a hardwood forest of American elm, white ash, white oak, silver and red maple.
Finger Lakes National Forest (Rutland)
The Finger Lakes National Forest provides plenty of "room to roam, " with few restrictions on recreation use. Popular recreation activities include auto travel, blueberry picking, hunting and fishing, observing nature and wildlife, camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, and snowmobiling. The Forest has over 25 miles of interconnecting trails, including the 12 mile Interloken National Recreation Trail and two miles of the Finger Lakes Trail.
Marsh - Billings - Rockefeller National Historical Park (Woodstock)
Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park is the only national park to focus on conservation history and the evolving nature of land stewardship in America. Opened in June 1998, Vermont's first national park preserves and interprets the historic Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller property.
