Alum Creek Lake (Lewis Center)

Alum Creek Lake was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reduce the flood hazard along Alum and Big Walnut Creeks, the Scioto River, and along the Ohio River. The city of Columbus shared part of the additional project cost for water supply for the metropolitan area. Other benefits of the lake project are recreation, fish and wildlife management, and downstream water quality. The majority of the park is leased to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to operate as a State Park.

Belleville Locks And Dam (Reedsville)

Provides a navigational pool 41.5 miles upstream to Willow Island Locks & Dam, and is an integral link in the Ohio River navigation channel located at Reedsville. This area is along the Lewis and Clark route.

Capt Anthony Meldahl Locks And Dam (Felicity)

Captain Anthony Meldahl Locks & Dam is located at mile marker 436 on the Ohio River. It creates a 95 mile navigational pool between Meldahl Locks & Dam and Greenup Locks & Dam. Meldahl is an integral link in the Ohio River navigational system. Tours of the facilities can be scheduled. The site offers fishing, picnic and restroom facilities (open from April to October), an observation tower, and wildlife viewing. Pets are allowed.

Delaware Lake (Delaware)

Delaware Lake offers Corps of Engineers, state park, and state wildlife area recreational opportunities. Delaware Lake is part of a system of dams that reduce flood stages in the Olentangy, Scioto, and Ohio River Basins, benefiting communities and agricultural lands between Delaware and the Gulf of Mexico. Golden Age and Golden Access passports may be used for a 50% discount at all Federally operated areas where a fee is charged.

Dillon Lake (Zanesville)

Picturesque setting for many outdoor adventures in this area. Ohio State Parks & Division of Wildlife operate most of the facilities around Dillion Lake. These organizations do not honor Golden Age or Golden Access or other Federal recreation passports.

Paint Creek Lake (Bainbridge)

Impressive, prehistoric Indian sites in the central Scioto River basin are in the vicinity of this lake. Rock climbing is permitted on the Harmony Trail wall and the Spillway walls only. Climbing maps are available at the Corps of Engineers office. Minimum impact climbing practices are encouraged. No lead climbing, no bolting, natural colored chalk only, bouldering no more than 4 ft. off the ground, and climb during daylight hours only.

Tom Jenkins Dam And Burr Oak Lake (Glouster)

Within an hour's drive of the caves and cliffs of Hocking Hills State Park.

Charles Mill Lake (Lucas)

Charles Mill Dam was constructed in 1935-36 and is primarily for flood control but also for recreation, fish and wildlife management. Extensive recreation facilities are operated by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. In Mansfield, see the Kingwood Center formal gardens in bloom. April-October.The Day Use Area below the dam is a peaceful, scenic place to picnic with grills, a small playground and restrooms. The restrooms are open on a seasonal basis (May-September).

Dover Dam (Dover)

No permanent pool, but there are day-use facilities along the river. Restored village of Zoar is 5 mi N of dam. Nearby attractions include Shoenbrunn State Park, operated by the Ohio Historical Society, and Warther Museum with 56 hard-carved, operating, miniature locomotives.

Mohicanville Dam (Lakeville)

Built in 1935, Mohicanville Dam, a flood control project, is a dry dam with no permanent pool. The dam site is located on the Lakefork of the Mohican River in northeast Ohio, and is used exclusively to control flood waters below it. Piedmont Lake (Piedmont)

Senecaville Lake (Senecaville)

At the Corps Senecaville Lake, extensive recreation facilities are operated by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD). Beach City Lake (Beach City)

Beach City Dam is located near the northern border of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on Sugar Creek, a tributary of the Tuscarawas River, about nine miles above New Philadelphia, Ohio. The dam was completed in 1936 for flood control and water conservation in the Muskingum Watershed area.The Wilmont Wilderness Center is located 3 miles west of the dam.

Leesville Lake (Bowerston)

Leesville Lake was constructed primarily for flood control, recreation, fish and wildlife enhancement. Leesville Lake is a popular camping spot for youth and church groups. Recreation facilities at the Corps Leesville Lake are operated by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD). Two marinas are located on the lake, being operated by private enterprises. Caesar Creek Lake (Waynesville)

A Regional Visitor Center for the Corps of Engineers is located at the dam. There is also a reconstructed pioneer village on the project. Caesar Creek Lake is located in Southwest Ohio and is situated in a geologic region known for Ordovician Age fossil collecting. The lake was completed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1978.

William H Harsha Lake (Batavia)

A 2, 160-acre lake made popular by Cincinnati boaters, its also the site of two abandoned gold mines. William H. Harsha Lake, former known as East Fork Lake, is located in southwestern Ohio, and is noted for Ordovician fossil beds. Although situated just a few miles from the Ohio River, the East Fork of the Miami River flows northward due to topography. The lake was completed by the Corps of Engineers in 1978.

West Fork Lake (Cincinnati)

Known as Winton Woods Park, the project features Hamilton County Park District campgrounds and naturalist services. West Fork Lake is located in southwest Ohio and lies completely in metropolitan Cincinnati. The lake was completed by the Corps of Engineers in 1952.

Located in the Ohio countryside and within a short drive of Akron, Youngstown and Warren, Ohio, the Berlin project offers visitors a wide variety of recreational experiences. Whether it is camping, boating, picnicking, or just relaxing in peaceful surroundings, you'll find it at Berlin Lake.

Hannibal Locks And Dam - Ohio River (Hannibal)

This modern structure replaces three old wicket-type dams which served river traffic for over 70 years. Several full-size wickets and a workboat, used to operate them, are displayed at the visitor center. This area is along the Lewis and Clark route.

This new facility replaces three obsolete locks and dams and provides a navigable pool to Hannibal Locks & Dam on the Ohio River. This area is along the Lewis and Clark route.

Wills Creek Lake (Coshocton)

A 900-acre lake near Roscoe Village, a restored town on the Ohio-Erie Canal.

Atwood Lake (Mineral City)

Atwood Lake was constructed primarily for flood control, recreation, fish and wildlife management. Located on the Corps' Atwood Lake, Atwood Lake Lodge and extensive recreation facilities are operated by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD). Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park (Dayton)

Dayton Aviation Heritage commemorates three exceptional men - Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright, and Paul Laurence Dunbar - and their work in the Miami Valley. Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve (Huron)

Old Woman Creek is the smallest reserve in the National Estuarine Research System. It is also the only Great Lakes-type, freshwater estuary in the system. The reserve features freshwater marshes, swamp forests, a barrier beach, upland forest, estuarine waters, stream and nearshore Lake Erie.

West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge (Lake Erie)

Boaters enjoy unlimited horsepower on Deer Creek Lake. In the summer, this 1277 acre lake is a popular spot for fishing and water sports. Additional facilities on the project include a marina, swimming beach, shooting range, archery range and horse trails.

North Branch Kokosing River Lake (Warsaw)

The North Branch of Kokosing Lake has lake front camping. A small, quiet (154 acre) fishing lake has a 10 horse power limit. It is leased to Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD). The Federal Golden Age and Golden Access Passports are no longer accepted, however, Golden Buckeye card holders and people who are 60 years or older and have proof of age recieve a 10% discount. The 2, 100-acre C. J. Brown Dam and Reservoir and a Corps-operated Visitor Center are located in central Ohio between the urban areas of Columbus and Dayton is home to two rare and unique prairie fens. The lake was completed by the Corps of Engineers in 1974.

New Cumberland Locks And Dam (Stratton)

A modern structure with a 1, 200- by 110-ft main chamber enables large tows to make quick passage through the lock. This area is along the Lewis and Clark route.

Wayne National Forest (Nelsonville)

The many waters of Portage Lakes State Park offer visitors a variety of outdoor recreational experiences. Boating, swimming and fishing are popular. The wetlands of the park attract waterfowl and shorebirds providing visitors enjoyment whether hunting or observing wildlife.

Pymatuning State Park (Andover)

In a setting that highlights the mystery of an old swamp forest and the excitement of a water recreation area, Pymatuning State Park invites outdoor lovers of all ages to enjoy a relaxing lakeside vacation experience. In addition to being one of the finest walleye and muskellunge lakes in the country, Pymatuning offers excellent camping, swimming and boating opportunities as well.

Quail Hollow State Park (Hartville)

Quail Hollow is a landscape of rolling meadows, marshes, pine and deciduous woods surrounding a 40-room manor. Scenic woodland trails, gardens and the house offer a variety of natural and cultural experiences for visitors.

Salt Fork State Park (Lore City)

The landscape of rural Guernsey County appears as a patchwork of forested hills, open meadows and misty valleys threaded by numerous streams. At the heart of this region is Salt Fork State Park, encompassing the woodlands and fields flanking Salt Fork Reservoir. As Ohio's largest state park, Salt Fork boasts recreational facilities to suit nearly every taste.

Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge (Oak Harbor)

Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge was donated to the Fish and Wildlife Service in 1964 by the owners of the Cedar Point Shooting Club. Currently, the refuge consists of 2, 445 acres of marsh, divided into three pools. The largest pool, almost 2, 000 acres, is the largest contiguous marsh in Ohio's Lake Erie marshes. Most of the refuge is closed to the public, however, a fishing area is open from June - August. The marshes of this refuge are home to large numbers of waterfowl and wading birds.

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge (Oak Harbor)

The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1961 to preserve habitat for migrating birds. Staff at the refuge also manage Cedar Point and West Sister Island refuges. The three refuges together now protect approximately 9, 000 acres of habitat and some of the last remnants of the "Great Black Swamp" in the heart of the Lake Erie marshes. The Lake Erie Marsh Region has historically been important to fish, migratory waterfowl, songbirds, and shorebirds.

Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial (Put-in-Bay)

On September 10, 1813, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry defeated and captured a British squadron of warships at the Battle of Lake Erie. The battle, fought during the War of 1812, secured control of Lake Erie for the United States and enabled General William Henry Harrison to conduct a successful invasion of Western Upper Canada. Harrison subsequently defeated the British and Indians at the Thames River on October 5, 1813.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park (Brecksville)

Just a short drive from the major metropolitan areas of Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park protects 33, 000 acres along the banks of the Cuyahoga River. Though such a short distance from urban environments, the park is worlds away. The winding Cuyahoga?the "crooked river, " as named by American Indians?gives way to rolling floodplain, steep valley walls and ravines, and lush upland forests.

Mohawk Dam (Warsaw)

This is a dry dam, which means there is no permanent pool and water is present while impounded during flood control operations. However, the Walhonding River is popular for canoeing and fishing. Picnicking and camping facilities are available along the river. Roscoe Village, a restored and historical canal town, is located near Coshocton. The area is leased to Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District(MWCD).

Barkcamp State Park (Belmont)

Belmont County's rugged hills provide the backdrop for picturesque Barkcamp State Park. In addition to fine recreational facilities, visitors will enjoy the mature woodlands, open meadows, scenic lake and abundant wildlife of this secluded park.

Buck Creek State Park (Springfield)

Buck Creek State Park lies in a fertile agricultural area, rich in Ohio's history. The park's recreational facilities center around the 2, 120-acre lake, offering endless water-related opportunities. Visitors enjoy the many wetlands, broad meadows and wildlife at this diverse park.

Caesar Creek State Park (Waynesville)

Caesar Creek State Park is highlighted by clear blue waters, scattered woodlands, meadows and steep ravines. The park offers some of the finest outdoor recreation in southwest Ohio including boating, hiking, camping and fishing.

Crane Creek State Park (Oak Harbor)

Located on the scenic shore of Lake Erie, Crane Creek State Park offers a vast freshwater marsh and spacious sandy beach for enjoyment. This coastal environment is home to more than 300 species of birds. Herons, waterfowl, warblers, gulls and the magnificent bald eagle make this park one of the best birdwatching areas in the country.

Delaware State Park (Delaware)

Dense woodlands, expansive meadows and a shimmering reservoir blend to create Delaware State Park. Once home to the Delaware Indians, this recreational area offers camping, swimming, boating, fishing and wildlife viewing for outdoor enthusiasts.

East Fork State Park (Bethel)

One of Ohio's largest state parks, East Fork offers a great diversity of recreational opportunities and natural history only 25 miles from Cincinnati. The park's terrain includes both rugged hills and open meadows, setting the stage for a wonderful getaway.

Findley State Park (Wellington)

Grand Lake St. Marys State Park (St. Marys)

Originally constructed as a feeder reservoir for the Miami-Erie Canal, Grand Lake St. Marys was for many years recognized as the largest man-made reservoir in the world.

Great Seal State Park (Chillicothe)

Great Seal State Park is dedicated to the wilderness spirit of Ohio. The history of the Shawnee nation and Ohio's early statehood is centered in these rugged hills. Challenging trails take visitors to scenic vistas of distant ridgetops and the Scioto Valley below. These very hills are depicted on the Great Seal of the State of Ohio, from which the park gets its name.

Harrison Lake State Park (Fayette)

Lake Logan State Park (Logan)

One of the best fishing lakes in Ohio awaits sportsmen in Hocking County at Lake Logan State Park. The lake sports northern pike, bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish and saugeye. Lake Logan is a day-use park that provides scenic picnic areas and secluded walking paths to enjoy the wooded beauty of Ohio's hill country.

Lake White State Park (Bainbridge)

Muskingum River State Park (Blue Rock)

The Muskingum River Parkway and its 160-year-old navigation system were designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in July 2001. Along with such majestic institutions as Hoover Dam, The Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge, the Muskingum River's 10 hand-operated locks are now recognized as one of America's great engineering accomplishments.

Punderson State Park (Newbury)

Tinker's Creek State Park (Newbury)

The swamps and marshlands of Tinker's Creek State Park harbor a variety of natural wonders. Herons, ducks, geese and beaver can be found in the spring-fed waters, while cattail, buttonbush and swamp white oak line the shores of this beautiful park.

Hopewell Culture National Historical Park (Chillicothe)

From about 200 BC to AD 500, the Ohio River Valley was a focal point of the prehistoric Hopewell culture. The term Hopewell describes a broad network of beliefs and practices among different Native American groups over a large portion of eastern North America. The culture is characterized by the construction of enclosures made of earthen walls, often built in geometric patterns, and mounds of various shapes.
