East Lansing WMD (East Lansing)
East Lansing WMD consists of two Waterfowl Production Areas including the 160 acre Schlee WPA in Jackson County and the 77 acre Kinney WPA in VanBuren County. Sites are managed primarily to maintain wetland and upland habitat for migrating and nesting waterfowl, migratory birds and resident game species.
Harbor Island National Wildlife Refuge (Lake Huron)
Harbor Island National Wildlife Refuge is located just off the northwest shore of Drummond Island, in Potagannissing Bay, on Lake Huron. The horseshoe-shaped island contains a variety of habitats that include a marsh-lined harbor in the center, sandy beaches, and mature stands of balsam fir, white cedar, paper birch, sugar maple, and red oak. The undeveloped habitats of the island support a diverse population of wildlife.
Huron National Wildlife Refuge (Lake Superior)
The beacon of Lighthouse Island gleams into the Northern Michigan night from its lonely vantage point 3 miles off the south shore of Lake Superior. Lighthouse Island, or West Huron, is the second largest of eight islands comprising the Huron Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Designated a refuge in 1905, this is the oldest national wildlife refuge in the Midwest Region. It was established for the protection of migratory birds, specifically, a large nesting colony of herring gulls.
Huron-Manistee National Forests (Cadillac)
Located in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, lies the Huron-Manistee National Forests. The forests contain approximately 964, 413 acres, including 5, 786 acres of wetlands. Huron-Manistee National Forests are actually two forests combined in 1945 for administration purposes.
Ottawa National Forest (Ironwood)
The almost one million acres of the Ottawa National Forest are located in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It extends from the south shore of Lake Superior down to Wisconsin and the Nicolet National Forest. The area is rich in wildlife viewing opportunies; topography in the northern portion is the most dramatic with breathtaking views of rolling hills dotted with lakes, rivers and spectacular waterfalls.
Seney National Wildlife Refuge (Seney)
Seney National Wildlife Refuge protects 95, 212 acres of diverse wetland and upland habitats that support a wide variety of wildlife. The refuge consists of marshes, fens, and bogs; coniferous and northern hardwood forests; upland barrens and meadows; and a 25, 000-acre Wilderness Area. Approximately 65% of the refuge is wetland.
Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge (Saginaw)
Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is located in central lower Michigan, approximately 25 miles south of Saginaw Bay. It was established in 1953 to provide habitat for migratory waterfowl. Known locally as the "Shiawassee Flats, " the refuge lies in the Saginaw Bay watershed, historically one of the largest and most productive wetland ecosystems in Michigan.
Wyandotte NWR (Saginaw)
The Refuge consists of two islands, Grassy and Mammajuda, and adjacent shallow water areas. It is located in the Detroit River off shore from Wyandotte, Michigan, from where it takes its name. The Refuge is situated in what was once one of the most significant migratory staging areas for diving ducks in the United States. Extensive beds of aquatic vegetation, particularly wild celery, attracted large concentrations of divers, primarily canvasback and scaup.
Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve (Alpena)
Lake Huron's unpredictable weather-its murky fog banks and sudden gales-coupled with rocky shoals helped Thunder Bay earn the unfortunate name of "Shipwreck Alley." During the Great Lakes' 200-year shipping history, scores of vessels ended their careers on the lake floor off Alpena, Michigan. The known wrecks rest as close to the surface as 12 feet and as deep as 180 feet.

The Michigan Wetland Managment District consists of two waterfowl production areas (WPAs): the 160-acre Schlee WPA in Jackson County and the 77-acre Kinney WPA in Van Buren County. Father Marquette Memorial Scenic Site
Introduction This Historic State Park hosts the nationalmemorial that honors the Jesuit priest who established Michigan's firstpermanent settlement. History Today, Father Marquette is recognized as one of the great explorers of the North American continent. On a rise overlooking the Straits of Mackinac, the Father Marquette National Memorial pays homage to this 17th-century missionary-explorer and the meeting of French and Native American cultures deep in the North American wilderness.

Lake Gogebic State Park (Marenisco)
LAKE GOGEBIC STATE PARKIntroduction Lake Gogebic State Park covers 360 acres and nearly a mile of lake frontage on the west shore of the largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula. About 30 campsites are located directly on the lake front and the rest of nestled among the trees not more than 100 yards from the lake.The campground is closed for winter. Wagner Falls Scenic Site
WAGNER FALLS STATE PARKIntroduction This scenic waterfall is nestled amongst virgin pine and hemlock trees. There is a small parking area and a half-mile trail. Location Travel one mile east of Munising on M-28 and a quarter mile west on M-94.
Meridian- Baseline State Park
MERIDIAN BASELINE STATE PARKThis unique, landlocked park designates the spot where all township, range and section measurements begins for the entire state of Michigan. It is not accessible to the public, but is being preserved for its historic value.

Within the park is a picnic area and an observation platform overlooking the Mackinac Bridge and the Straits of Mackinac. Wells State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Cedar River)
Wells State Park is located on Green Bay about 30 miles south of Escanaba. Its 678 acres include a three-mile shoreline with beautiful sandy beach for swimming, a large picnic area, a modern campground and rustic cabins that are available to rent year round. The park, established in 1925, was donated to the State of Michigan by the children of John Walter Wells, a pioneer lumberman in the area.
Bald Mountain Recreation Area (Lake Orion)
baldmountainBald Mountain Recreation Area consists of 4, 637 rolling acres. The picturesque park area has some of the steepest hills and most rugged terrain in southeastern Michigan. Camping is limited to rustic cabins and organizational groups, but the extensive trails, inland lakes, trout streams and wild game provide recreation opportunities all year long.Location The park is located eight miles north of Pontiac, just off of M-24 (Lapeer Road). The park is accessible from I-75 using exit #81.

Brighton Recreation Area (Howell)
BRIGHTON RECREATION AREAIntroduction Brighton Recreation Area provides 4, 947 acres of recreation for park visitors to use. The area has a combination of high, irregular ranges of hills, interspersed with a number of attractive lakes. Oak forest, thick hedgerows and open spaces blend on the uplands while grassy marshes, shrub masses and dense swamp timber mark the lowlands. Location Take I-96 to exit 147 at Brighton.
Cheboygan State Park "on Lake Huron" (Cheboygan)
CHEBOYGAN STATE PARKCheboygan State Park is open all year for a variety of activities. A system of well-marked trails through the park provides access to scenic Lake Huron vistas, glimpses of rare wildflowers and the lake shore species. Modern camping, rustic cabins, tents and teepees are all available within the park. The Little Billy Elliot Creek flows through the park and is known for its trout. Fishing is also plentiful in Duncan Bay.
Coldwater Lake State Park
COLDWATER LAKE STATE PARKIntroduction This is an undeveloped property with hunting acess allowed. The terrain is a mixture of swamp and farmland leading up to the lake.
Dodge #4 State Park (Waterford)
DODGE #4 STATE PARKIntroduction A white sandy beach and a one-mile shoreline on Cass Lake makes Dodge #4 State Park an excellent location for summer and winter water activities. The land which now comprises Dodge #4 State Park was donated to the State of Michigan by the Dodge Brothers Corporation in 1922, under the stipulation that it always be maintained as a public park.

HART MONTAGUE TRAIL STATE PARKThe Hart-Montague Trail State Park is a paved, 22-mile trail passing through rural, forested lands. Scenic overlooks and picnic areas are located along the route. The DNR currently provides only emergency maintenance services and seeks governmental agencies to operate and maintain its linear park trails.Location The trail is accessible from Hart and Montague, as well as communities between the two cities along US-31.
Highland Recreation Area (White Lake)
HIGHLAND RECREATION AREAHighland Recreation Area offers 5, 900 acres of forest, marshes and lakes in the rolling hills of Southern Michigan. With trails to accommodate equestrian riders, mountain bikers, hikers and skiers, there's and activity for every season in this park. Three different day-use areas provide ample space for picnics, swimming, horseshoes or volleyball. Access sites are located on four lakes within the park for fishing and recreational boating.
Holly Recreation Area (Holly)
HOLLY RECREATION AREAHolly Recreation Area, located within the northern portion of Oakland County between Pontiac and Flint, is less than an hour's drive from the Detroit metropolitan area. The park's nearly 8, 000 acres of rolling woodlands and open fields provides opportunities for a variety of outdoor activities. The campground is closed for winter. Island Lake Recreation Area (Brighton)
ISLAND LAKE RECREATION AREAIsland Lake Recreation Area is a 4, 000-acre park in Livingston County that offers an "up north" experience without leaving southeast Michigan. The terrain is a mixture of open brush land to mature hardwood forest, with some pockets of open meadows mixed in. Island Lake is the only balloon port in the state park system. Balloons usually take off in the early morning or late evening, depending on the wind and weather.
Metamora- Hadley Recreation Area (Metamora)
METAMORA-HADLEYMetamora-Hadley Recreation Area is located in Lapeer County, eight miles south of the city of Lapeer. The park consists of 723 acres with 80-acre Lake Minnewanna in the center. We welcome campers, hikers, boaters, anglers, hunters, cross-country skiers and others to enjoy a wide variety recreational opportunities throughout the year. Location From M-24 (Lapeer Road), take Pratt Road west two miles to Hurd Road. Go south on Hurd Road less than a mile to the park.
North Higgins Lake State Park (Roscommon)

Petoskey State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Petoskey)
PETOSKEY STATE PARKPetoskey State Park, located on the north end of Little Traverse Bay, is situated on 304 scenic acres and offers a beautiful sandy beach on the bay. The park has two separate modern campgrounds. Tannery Creek offers 98 campsites, and Dunes offers 70 campsites. The campgrounds are closed for winter. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area (Waterford)
PONTIAC LAKEPontiac Recreation Area, with over 3, 800 acres of rolling woodland terrain, is open year round for a variety of activities. The area's habitat, a mixture of marshes, ponds, heavy forests, old farm fields, river bottom and lakes support a wide variety of animals and excellent hunting. Designated trails meandering throughout the recreation area are available for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking. The campground is closed for winter.
Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic State Park (Ubly)
SANILAC PETROGLYPHS HISTORIC STATE PARKIntroduction This historic site is administered jointly with the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries and contains Michigan's only known rock carvings attributed to Native American Indian workmanship. The Sanilac Petroglyphs site is presently CLOSED to the general public. Group access may be obtained by DNR Special Use Permit, with a fee charged. Seven Lakes State Park (Fenton)
An endless variety of topography and ecosystems form the area called Seven Lakes. Its land was a combination of farmland, rolling hills and forests. About 230 acres of water with several miles of shoreline await the park user.A development group originally purchased the land but they were unable to follow through with their plans and sold the land to the state in 1969.
Sterling State Park "on Lake Erie" (Monroe)
STERLING STATE PARKThe only state park on Lake Erie, Wm. C. Sterling State Park's 1, 000 acres offers great recreational opportunities within an hour of Detroit. Swimming, boating, fishing, camping and wildlife viewing have all been upgraded with the 2003 renovation of the park. Location Take I-75 to the Dixie Highway exit and go one mile northeast on Dixie Highway.
Tawas Point State Park "on Lake Huron" (East Tawas)
TAWAS POINT STATE PARKTawas Point is located off US-23, 2.5 miles southeast of East Tawas on Tawas Beach Road. It is just over an hour drive from the Tri-Cities and only three hours from the Detroit area. The park contains 183 acres situated on the end of a sand spit that forms Tawas Bay. It has been referred to as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest." The campground is located on Tawas Bay where the water is shallow and warm for swimming. Located within the park is the Tawas Point Lighthouse.
Van Buren State Park "on Lake Michigan" (S. Haven)
VAN BUREN STATE PARKVan Buren State Park offers approximately 400 acres of land located along the Lake Michigan shoreline in northern Van Buren County. The focal points of the park are its high dune formations and one mile of sandy beach. Van Buren became a state park in May of 1965 when the original 167-acre plot was purchased from the Harry LaBar Drake family. Since then two other land purchases have been made to make up the current park.
Warren Dunes State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Sawyer)
Warren Dunes State Park provides 1, 950 acres of recreational opportunities along the beautiful shore of Lake Michigan in southwestern Michigan. The rugged dune formation rises 240 feet above the lake and offers spectacular views and excellent hang gliding. The park has more than two miles of shoreline, six miles of hiking trails and is open year-round. Location: The park is located 2.5 miles south of Bridgman on the west side of Red Arrow Highway.

WETZEL STATE PARKIntroduction Wetzel State Park is an undeveloped park providing areas for hiking, hunting, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Location From New Haven, take New Haven Road three miles northwest to the park.
Young State Park (Boyne City)
YOUNG STATE PARKYoung State Park is located at the east end of beautiful Lake Charlevoix. The park spans over 560 acres in Charlevoix County and is a mix of gently rolling terrain, lowlands and cedar swamp. Officially opened in 1921, some of the buildings in existence today were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and 1940s. The campground is closed for winter. Baraga State Park (Baraga)
Baraga State Park is situated a quarter mile south of Baraga along US-41 and overlooks scenic Keweenaw Bay of Lake Superior. Camping is available at 118 grassy sites or in the park's minicabin. Watching wildlife, fishing, hiking, swimming and boating are among the many activities of this park.The campground is closed for winter. St. Marys Falls Canal (Sault St Marie)
The world-famous "Soo Locks" were a private enterprise until transferred to the U.S. Government in 1881. Visitors can see Great Lakes freighters over 1, 000 ft long and "salties" (ocean-going ships) from around the world as they lock through between Lakes Superior and Huron. The waterway forms the international border between the U.S. and Canada in the cities of Sault Ste. Marie, MI and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Hiawatha National Forest (Escanaba)
Located between three of the Great Lakes, within the central and eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, lies the Hiawatha National Forest. Rolling hills forested with northern hardwoods, white pine and hemlock, flatland covered by red pine, jack pine and aspen, and large open and tree covered wetlands form the 879, 000 acres of the Hiawatha National Forest.
Lakeport State Park "on Lake Huron" (Lakeport)
LAKEPORT STATE PARKLying along Lake Huron, Lakeport State Park provides southeast Michigan residents access to the Great Lakes. The park has two distinct units separated by the village of Lakeport. A total of 283 sites are divided between the two campgrounds. All sites have a picnic table, fire circle, electricity, modern toilet/shower buildings along with several pull-through sites and camp pads for ease of leveling campers.The campground is closed for winter.

Kirtlands Warbler National Wildlife Refuge (Northern Lower Peninsula)
The Kirtland's Warbler Refuge is located throughout 8 counties in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. It is the only known nesting area of one of the world's rarest birds, its namesake, the Kirtland's warbler. Seney National Wildlife Refuge is responsible for land management of 119 separate tracts totaling 6, 684 acres. The Kirtland's warbler nests primarily in young jack pine forest growing on Grayling sand. This soil type is found only in a few counties in northern lower Michigan.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (Empire)
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore encompasses a 60 km (35 mi.) stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern coastline, as well as North and South Manitou Islands. The park was established primarily for its outstanding natural features, including forests, beaches, dune formations, and ancient glacial phenomena. The Lakeshore also contains many cultural features including a 1871 lighthouse, three former Life-Saving Service/Coast Guard Stations and an extensive rural historic farm district.
Isle Royale National Park (Houghton)
Wolves and moose, the wild North Woods forest, everchanging weather and a cool climate, and the crystal clear waters and rugged shoreline of Lake Superior characterize Isle Royale National Park. This wilderness archipelago is 45 miles long and nine miles wide at its widest point. The park encompasses a total area of 850 square miles including submerged lands which extends four and a half miles out into Lake Superior.
Keweenaw National Historical Park (Calumet)

Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge (Lakes Michigan and Huron)
Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of eight islands in Lakes Michigan and Huron. Thunder Bay and Scarecrow islands in Thunder Bay (near Alpena, MI), and Big and Little Charity islands in Saginaw Bay are managed by Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge in Saginaw, MI. Seney National Wildlife Refuge has management resonsibility for Gull, Pismire, Hat, and Shoe islands, part of the Beaver Island Group in the northern portion of Lake Michigan.
Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge (Saginaw)
On December 21, 2001, President Bush signed legislation establishing the first International Wildlife Refuge in North America. The refuge, which includes islands, coastal wetlands, marshes, shoals, and riverfront lands along 18 miles of the Lower Detroit River, will protect and restore habitat for 29 species of waterfowl, 65 kinds of fish, and 300 species of migratory birds along the river in Michigan and Canada.
Bewabic State Park (Crystal Falls)
A 144-site campground is situated in a shady, wooded site. Most of the sites have buffer strips between them to allow for privacy and every site has electricity, a fire ring and a picnic table. Picnic areas, a hiking trail, two playgrounds, an excellent beach and a boat launch to Fortune Lake are among the additional amenities at this park.The campground is closed for winter. Agate Falls Scenic Site (Manenisco)
New Page 1Considered by many to be one of upper Michigan's most picturesque waterfalls, Agate Falls is located on the middle branch of the Ontonagon River. The falls are created as the river finds its way over an extended shelf of terraced sandstone. The resulting waterfall is a broad band of interlacing cascades and small falls nearly 40 feet high. Access to view the falls is via an improved, accessible *-mile foot trail.
Brimley State Park "on Lake Superior" (Brimley)
BRIMLEY STATE PARKIntroduction Brimley State Park provides recreational opportunities along the beautiful shore of Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay. One of the oldest state parks in the Upper Peninsula, it was established in 1923 when the Village of Brimley gave the DNR the park's initial 38 acres. The remaining acreage was acquired through purchase or exchange. Hunting, fishing, boating and hiking are popular amenities found at Brimley. The campground is closed for winter.
Craig Lake State Park (Champion)
CRAIG LAKE STATE PARKIntroduction Craig Lake State Park is the most remote state park in the system. It spans more than 6, 900 acres in Baraga County. Craig Lake is a wilderness area and access into the park is somewhat of an adventure. Vehicles with high ground clearance are recommended due to the rocky conditions of the road.
Fayette Historic State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Garden)

FORT WILKINS STATE PARKFort Wilkins State Park, in the northern Keweenaw Penninsula, offers camping and day use facilities and features a restored army military outpost and lighthouse museum. Fort Wilkins became a State Park in 1923. Extensive restoration work and development began in the 1930s under the Work Project Administration. The campground is closed for winter. Indian Lake State Park (Manistique)
INDIAN LAKE STATE PARKIndian Lake State Park is located on Indian Lake, the fourth largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula with an area of 8, 400 acres. It is six miles long and three miles wide. The lake was once called M'O'Nistique Lake. According to surveyor records dated 1850, Native Americans lived in log cabins near the outlet of the Lake. The park is composed of two units which are three miles apart and separated by the waters of Indian Lake.
Laughing Whitefish Falls Scenic Site
FORT CUSTER RECREATION AREAIntroduction Laughing Whitefish Falls is one of the Upper Peninsula's many impressive waterfalls. The site features a mile of foot trails, picnic area with water pump and three observation decks overlooking the falls. Location Take M-94 north of Sundell two miles. No services.
McLain State Park "on Lake Superior" (Hancock)
MCLAIN STATE PARKMcLain State Park is situated in the heart of the Keweenaw Peninsula on beautiful Lake Superior and is centrally located between the cities of Calumet and Hancock. The park offers two miles of sand beach on Lake Superior. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of activities in the park: fishing, windsurfing, berry picking, beachcombing, rock hounding, sight-seeing and hunting.
Kal-Haven Trail State Park
KAL HAVEN TRAIL STATE PARKIntroduction Kal-Haven Trail State Park is a 34-mile crushed limestone path connecting South Haven and Kalamazoo. The trail meanders through wooded areas, past farm lands and over rivers and streams. Trail highlights include a camelback bridge and covered bridge. The DNR currently provides only emergency maintenance services and seeks governmental agencies to operate and maintain its linear park trails.
Au Sable River State Forest Canoe Camp
13 sites for tent or small trailer use, 5 of which are designated for canoe-access only. Located on the main branch of the Au Sable River. Universally accessible picnic tables. Muskallonge Lake State Park "on Lake Superior" (Newberry)
MUSKALLONGE LAKE STATE PARKMuskallonge Lake State Park is located 28 miles northwest of Newberry in Luce County. The 217-acre park is situated between the shores of Lake Superior and Muskallonge Lake and the area is well known for its forests, lakes and streams. Muskallonge Lake State Park was the former site of Deer Park, a lumbering town in the late 1880s, and prior to its lumbering history, an Indian encampment.
Porcupine Mountains State Park "on Lake Superior" (Ontonagon)

The park's 60, 000 acres are one of the few remaining large wilderness areas in the Midwest. Tahquamenon Falls State Park (Apradise)
TAHQUAMENON FALLSTahquamenon Falls State Park encompasses close to 40, 000 acres stretching over 13 miles. Most of this is undeveloped woodland without roads, buildings or power lines. The centerpiece of the park, and the very reason for its existence, is the Tahquamenon River with its waterfalls. One of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. It has a drop of nearly 50 feet and is more than 200 feet across.
Van Riper State Park (Champion)
Van Riper State Park is located 17 miles west of Ishpeming on US-41. This 1, 200 acre park contains one-half mile of frontage on the east end of Lake Michigamme with a fine sand beach. The water temperature is generally moderate -- a pleasant change from Lake Superior temperatures. Algonac State Park (Marine City)

Bass River Recreation Area
BALD MOUNTAIN RECREATION AREABass River Recreation Area, a 1, 100-acre site in central Ottawa County, consists of open meadows, open brush land, mature hardwoods, small ponds and a 300-acre lake. It has approximately three miles of frontage on the Grand River. The park is used primarily for boating, hiking, mountain biking and horse back riding (on designated trails) as well as hunting. Location Take the Eastmanville exit from I-96, go south on 68th Ave. approximately 4 miles to Warner Rd.

DUCK LAKE STATE PARKIntroduction Duck Lake State Park is a 728 acre day use park, located in Muskegon County. Featuring a towering sand dune, the park stretches from the northern shore of Duck Lake to Lake Michigan. The terrain is a mixture of open brush land to mature hardwood forest, with some pockets of open meadows mixed in. The land was purchased by the Nature Conservancy from two Boy Scout organizations, and acquired by the state in 1974.
Fisherman's Island State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Chalevoix)
FISHERMAN'S ISLAND STATE PARKFisherman's Island State Park is a 2, 678-acre park in Charlevoix County that features a park road that travels for two and one-half miles along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Away from the shoreline, the park's terrain consists of rolling dunes, covered with maple, birch, and aspen, broken up by bogs of cedar and black spruce. Location To reach the park's main entrance, head five miles south on US-31 from Charlevoix and turn right (westward) on Bell Bay Road.
Fort Custer Recreation Area (Augusta)
FORT CUSTER RECREATION AREAFort Custer Recreation Area comprises 2, 988 acres located between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. The terrain is typical of southern Michigan farm country, with second growth forests and remnant areas of prairie. Praire restoration is in progress with excellent results. The area features three lakes, the Kalamazoo River and an excellent trail system.

Hartwick Pines State Park (Grayling)

The principal feature of this park is the 49-acre forest of Old Growth Pines which gives the park its name.

Ionia Recreation Area (Ionia)
IONIA STATE RECREATION AREARolling hills, babbling brooks, open meadows, forested ridges, a lake nestled in the hills and a river winding its way through woods and fields -- that's Ionia State Recreation Area. The 4, 500 acres of flat to rolling terrain is a mixture of open field, mature hardwood forest, and pine plantations. Four miles of Grand River floodplain follow the river course on the north border of the park. Dammed waterfowl floodings and other wetlands dot the park. Wildflowers abound.
Lake Hudson Recreation Area (Clayton)
LAKE HUDSON RECREATION AREALake Hudson Recreation Area has 2, 746 acres of recreational opportunities around Lake Hudson. The park, which lies in southeast Michigan, offers premier muskie fishing and game hunting. The terrain is gently rolling with a mixture of open brush land to mature hardwood forest, with some pockets of open meadows mixed in. A new beach area provides an excellent place for sunbathing and swimming.
Lakelands Trail State Park (Pinckney)
LAKELANDS TRAIL STATE PARKLakelands Trail State Park is one of four linear state parks in the Michigan State Park system that have been converted from abandoned railroad corridors. This trail currently is completed between Stockbridge and Pinckney and passes through wooded areas and rolling farmland. It is approximately 13-miles long and currently has a gravel type surface.
Mitchell State Park (Cadillac)
WM MITCHELL STATE PARKWilliam Mitchell State Park is a popular camping, fishing and boating destination. The 245-acre park is situated between Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac and provides an excellent opportunity to view a variety of wildlife on the outskirts of Cadillac. The park was officially dedicated in 1919. A historic canal connects the two lakes and runs directly through the park. Location The park is on M-115, west of Cadillac near the intersection with M-55.

You may observe all these natural features by hiking the park's three- mile nature trail. The campground, set among virgin white pines, offers solitude and serenity, and plenty of family fun.
Ortonville Recreation Area (Metamora)
Ortonville Recreation Area is located in north Oakland and southern Lapeer counties. This approximately 5, 400 acre recreation area contains high wooded hills and a wide range of recreational activities The development began in 1945, but by the end of 1948, more than 3, 700 acres had been secured for the purpose of public recreational use. Additional land acquisitions have increased the area to its present size.

PROUD LAKE RECREATION AREAProud Lake Recreation Area, with more than 4, 700 acres, is located on the scenic Huron River in Oakland County and offers diverse and plentiful recreational opportunities. More than 20 miles of trails cover several diverse habitats. During the winter months, skiers can enjoy seeing the evergreens draped with snow. In the spring, hepatica, marsh marigold, violets and many other wildflowers abound. Guided interpretive walks and other nature activities are offered.

Rifle River Recreation Area (Lupton)
RIFLE RIVERRifle River Recreation Area is a wilderness located within the AuSable State Forest and provides a variety of recreational opportunities. This area was formerly a private hunting and fishing retreat owned by the late H.M. Jewett, a pioneer auto manufacturer. In 1945 the tract, then called Grousehaven, was purchased by the Department of Conservation from Mrs. Jewett.
Saugatuck Dunes State Park "on Lake Michigan"
SAUGATUCK DUNES STATE PARKA day-use park along a secluded strip of Lake Michigan shoreline, Saugatuck Dunes State Park offers 1, 000 acres of land with 2.5 miles of shore line. In addition, the park has fresh water coastal dunes that are over 200 feet tall. The park's terrain varies from steep slopes to rolling hills. The park, located in Allegan County, is relatively undeveloped.
Silver Lake State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Mears)
SILVER LAKE STATE PARKSilver Lake State Park is a 3000-acre park in Oceana County bordered by Lake Michigan. This area includes both dune country and acres of mature forest. The dune ridges and valleys are mostly windblown sand and lack trees, scrub brush and dune grass. The dune area is sometimes compared to a desert. Silver Lake State Park contains more than four miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and boasts a large sandy beach. In 1919, Carrie E. Mears donated 25 acres of land for park purposes.
Sleepy Hollow State Park (Laingsburg)
SLEEPY HOLLOW STATE PARKSleepy Hollow State Park, located in Clinton County, contains more than 2, 600 acres and is situated on Price Road off from US-27 near St. Johns, Ovid and Laingsburg. A river winds its way through the woods and fields of the park, and Lake Ovid is nestled in the middle of it all. Lake Ovid is a 410-acre lake developed by damming the Little Maple River. The park offers year-round opportunity for recreation. The campground is closed for winter.
Sleeper State Park "on Lake Huron" (Caseville)
SLEEPER STATE PARK Albert E. Sleeper State Park comprises 723 acres of forest, wetlands and sandy beach and dunes located on the Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron. Visitors can watch sunsets on the bay, relax in the shade and seclusion of the campground or roam the trails of the ancient dune forests. The park first opened as a county park in 1925. In 1927 the state acquired the property and called it Huron State Park. In 1944, the park was renamed in honor of Albert E.
South Higgins Lake State Park (Roscommon)
SOUTH HIGGINS LAKE STATE PARKSouth Higgins State Park is a 1, 000-acre park split in half by County Road 100. To the north is Higgins Lake and to the south is Marl Lake and 700 acres forested in maple, oak and pine. The park contains almost one mile of shoreline along Higgins Lake, which is a large spring-fed body of water known for its clarity and fishing potential. Marl Lake is considerably smaller, shallower and less developed.
Sturgeon Point Scenic Site "on Lake Huron"
Sturgeon Point Scenic Site juts into Lake Huron, and waves off the Point conceal a long and shallow reef which extends for almost a full mile beyond the visible confines of the land. This undeveloped site offers parking for visitors interested in visiting the lighthouse and museum thatrests on the property. THOMPSON'S HARBOR STATE PARKIntroduction Situated along seven and a half miles of Lake Huron shoreline, this undeveloped park provides a rustic retreat for hikers exploring the park's six miles of trails. Traverse City State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Traverse City)
Traverse City State ParkTraverse City State Park is a 47-acre urban park that features a quarter mile of beautiful beach on the Grand Traverse Bay. The park is only two miles from downtown Traverse City, one of the most popular resort towns in Michigan. The park was established in 1920 on about 16 acres of land after the logging industry in the area began to wane. In 1921 and 1939, parcels were added to increase the park's land area to its present size.

WARREN WOODS STATE PARKIntroduction Two-thirds of Warren Woods Natural Area's 311 acres consist of a beech/maple climax forest. A quiet hiking trail leads visitors to the rustic Galien River in this undisturbed natural area. Location Take I-94 to exit 6, and drive two and a half miles east.
White Pine Trail State Park (Reed City)
WHITE PINE TRAIL STATE PARKIntroduction The newest state park in the system, this trail is 92 miles long. An 88-mile section is open from Cadillac to Belmont. The trail surface is natural ballast and hard packed gravel, with 13 miles of asphalt pavement from Reed City to Big Rapids and 7 miles of asphalt pavement from just north of Rockford to Belmont. Waterloo Recreation Area (Chelsea)
Waterloo Recreation Area is the largest park in the Lower Peninsula. At more than 20, 000 acres, the park boasts two modern campgrounds, a rustic campground, an equestrian campground, a swimming beach, several picnic sites, 11 excellent fishing lakes, eight boat launches, 12 miles of interpretive nature trails, 47 miles of hiking trails, three rustic cabins, numerous equestrian trails and the Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center.
Wilderness State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Carp Lake)
WILDERNESS STATE PARKWilderness State Park offers visitors a variety of year-round recreational activities within its 8, 000 acres. Wilderness areas and a beautiful shoreline provide great places to observe naure from the nurmerous trails throughout the park. The park's 250 modern campsites are divided into two units, the Lakeshore and the Pines. Six rustic cabins and three rustic bunkhouses are additional options for accommodations withint the park.
Wilson State Park (Harrison)
WILSON STATE PARKSituated on 36 wooded acres with a sandy beach on Budd Lake, Wilson State Park is located on the north end of Budd Lake in Clare County. The park was originally the site of the Wilson Brothers Sawmill and Company Store, which thrived in the late 1800s. The land was deeded to the City of Harrison in 1901 and in 1920 was turned over to the State of Michigan to be used as a state park. The park was officially dedicated in 1927.
Yankee Springs Recreation Area (Middleville)
YANKEE SPRINGS RECREATION AREAYankee Springs Recreation Area was once the hunting grounds of the Algonquin Indians and the famous Chieftain, Chief Noonday. The site was established in 1835 and the village was made famous by Yankee Bill Lewis who owned and operated a hotel along the stagecoach run from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids.The rugged terrain, the bogs and marshes, the lakes and streams, and the unique beauty of the park's 5, 200 acres lend itself to many forms of recreation.
Negwegon State Park "on Lake Huron"
NEGWEGON STATE PARKNegwegon State Park is a rustic, undeveloped area open for hunting and hiking. The terrain is a mixture of low land areas, with small ridges, to mature pine forest, with some hardwoods and aspen forest, with some pockets of open meadows mixed in.Location Take US-23 12 miles north of Harrisville to Black River Road. Go east on Black River Road for one and a half miles. Drive north on Sandhill Road, an unmarked road, two and a half miles.
Colonial Michillimackinac Historic State Park

Leelanau State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Northport)
LEELANAU STATE PARKWelcome to Leelanau State Park, located at the tip of the little finger on the beautiful Leelanau Peninsula, where over 1, 300 acres are waiting for visitors to enjoy. The word "Leelanau" is the Native American word for "A Land of Delight" and could not better describe the area. The park has the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum, a rustic campground, two mini cabins, 8.5 miles of hiking/skiing trails and a picnic area.
Ludington State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Ludington)
LUDINGTON STATE PARKLudington State Parkis comprised of nearly 5, 300 acres of scenic sand dunes, shoreline vista, ponds, marshlands, and forests. It is situated between Hamlin Lake and Lake Michigan with several miles of shoreline and beaches on both bodies of water. The three campgrounds at Ludington State Park -- Pines, Cedar and Beechwood -- have a combined total of 344 modern campsites.
Mears State Park "on Lake Michigan" (Pentwater)
CHARLES MEARS STATE PARKCharles Mears State Park is located in the quaint village of Pentwater along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Paved campsite lots are surrounded by fine sand, and a swimming beach is adjacent to the harbor pier. The existing park land was once owned by Charles Mears, an early settler of Pentwater. The land was donated to the State of Michigan in 1923 by Carrie Mears, the daughter of Charles Mears. Location From US-31, take the Pentwater exit and go west on Lowell Street.
